पावनखिंड या ते दुर्गम भागामध्ये शूर पराक्रमी 300 मावळ्यांनी, दहा हजार यवनी सैनिकांना आपल्या अगम्य शक्ती आणि गनिमी काव्याने या खिंडीत कसे रोखले असेल त्याची प्रचिती या खिंडीची खोली पाहताना येते. यावरून छत्रपती शिवरायांचे हिंदवी स्वराज्यासाठी केलेले कष्ट, सैनिकांना देण्यात येणारी वागणूक आणि प्रेम हे त्या वेळच्या इतर कुठच्याही राजा मार्फत दिले जात नव्हते. ते प्रेम शिवरायांनी आपल्या मावळ्यांना दिले. अशा प्रकारचे सह्याद्रीतले दुर्गम ठिकाणी वाट शोधून काढणारे बहिर्जी नाईक यांनाही येथे विसरून चालणार नाही. शिवा काशीद हे जरी पावनखिंडीत पोचले नसतील, तरी राजासाठी केलेत प्राणार्पण पण हे तेवढेच महत्त्वाचे होते.
