We had visited Karneshwar temple during our Ratnagiri trip. This is an attempt to bring lesser known places in Maharashtra and Indian culture to the world by visiting them.

Narrative 1,

According to the first legend, Karneshwar temple was built by King Karna during the Chalukya rule and his adored Lord Shiva was established. Hence the name of this temple is Karna ka Ishwar = Karneshwar

Narrative 2, आख्यायिका 2

According to another Narrative, this temple dates back to the Pandava period. This. This is the Mahendragiri mountain of that time where Parashuram taught Suryaputra Karna archery. The temple was built on the orders of Lord Parshuram and was built by the five Pandavas themselves.

या मंदिराचे बांधकाम हे एका रात्रीत पांडवा मार्फत करण्यात आले, त्यावेळची एक रात्रं म्हणजे आजचे सहा महिने. हे मंदिर एका मगरीच्या आकाराच्या शिळेवर स्थापन केले आहे. त्यामुळे मंदिरा भोवती असलेल्या मार्गावरूनच मंदिराला प्रदक्षिणा घालता येते. मंदिराच्या आत, पांडवांच्या पाच थाळ्या आहेत. आणी एक शिलालेख आहे, जो कोणी त्या शिलालेखात असलेला मजकुर समजू शकेल त्यास या वास्तु चे गुढ समजता येइल. या आख्यायिकेनुसार असे ही सांगितले जाते. की या मंदिराचा कळस हा पाडावांना पहाट झाल्या मुळे पूर्ण करता आला नाही. अन्यथा यास काशी येवढे महत्व प्राप्त झाले असते.

कर्णेश्वर मंदिर हे हेमाडपंती शिल्प आणी वास्तु रचनेचे उत्तम उदाहरण आहे. यामध्ये काळ्या पाषाणात अगदी अविश्वसनीय असे कोरीव काम करण्यात आले आहे. मंदिराच्या मुख्य दरवाज्या वरील बकुळीच्या फुलाचे झुंबराचे नक्षीकाम हे अप्रतिम आहे.
