Nana was brought up with his family in Menavali village. Menavali is a scenic village near the Krishna river in wai taluka, Satara district. During this period, Nana Fadnavis built this palace as safe as a fort and in close proximity to nature. Fine architecture and solid construction are the hallmarks of this palace. Looking like a fort from the outside, this palace is a fine example of Peshwa architecture on the inside.

नाना यांना सातारा जिल्ह्यातील, वाई तालुक्यातील असलेले मेणवली हे कृष्णा नदी जवळील मेनावली या निसर्गरम्य गावी सहकुटुंब वास्तव्य केले. याकाळात नाना फडणवीस यांनी एका किल्याप्रमाणे सुरक्षित आणी तेव्हढाच निसर्गाच्या सानिध्यात या वाड्याचे निर्माण केले. उत्तम वास्तूकला आणी भक्कम उभारणी ही या वाड्याची वैशिष्टय़ आहे. बाहेरुन किल्ल्यासारखा दिसणारा हा वाडा आतील बाजूस  असलेल्या पेशवेकालीन वास्तू कलेचं एक उत्तम उदाहरण आहे.

Architecture of Nana fhadanvis wada

Now let us understand the architectural design of Nana Phadnis’ palace. The palace is a two-storied buildingand built on a land of about one and a half acres. whose foundation is made of solid black stone. The upper part is made of teak and shisam wood. There are three teahouse towers around the castle. Built according to Vastu Shastra, this palace has many secret doors, many rooms, office, kitchen, dormitory of Nana Fadnavis, it has three entrances in north, west and south directions. The northern one is the main entrance to the fort and the western entrance opens onto the ghats. The palace has some of the masterpieces of art like wall paintings, beautifully carved wooden ceilings, cypress pillars with cushions.

आता आपण नाना फडणीस यांच्या वाड्याची वास्तू रचना समजून घेऊ. वाडा ही एक दुमजली इमारत असून तो तब्बल दीड एकर जमिनीवर बनवलेला आहे. जिचा पाया भक्कम अशा काळ्या दगडापासून बनवलेला आहे. आणी वरील भाग सागवानी आणी शिसम या लाकडापासून बनवलेला आहे. वाड्याच्या सभोवताली तीन टेहाळणी बुरुज आहेत. वास्तू शास्त्रानुसार बनवलेला हा वाडा त्यात अनेक गुप्त दरवाजे, अनेक खोल्या, दफ्तर, कचेरी, नाना फडणवीस यांचे शयनगृह गृह, याला उत्तर, पश्चिम आणि दक्षिण दिशांना तीन प्रवेशद्वार आहेत. उत्तरेकडील एक आहे वाड्याचे मुख्य प्रवेशद्वार आणि पश्चिमेचे प्रवेशद्वार घाटांवर उघडते. वाड्यात भिंत चित्रे, सुरेख कोरीवकाम केलेले लाकडी छत, चकत्या असलेले सायप्रस खांब अशा कलेचे काही उत्कृष्ट नमुने आहेत.

Personal Experience visit to Menavali nana fadnavis wada

We were visited this place during our trip to Wai. Although the castle is almost 250 years old, it is still in good condition. Special thanks to fadanvis family who maintain this place. Today it is a private property of the descendants of Nana Fadnavis Wada – the Fadnis-Menawalikar family. So let’s take a tour of this palace.

आम्ही आमच्या वाई सहली दरम्यान या वाड्यास भेट दिली होती. वाडा हा तब्बल 250 वर्षे जुना असूनही अजून सुस्थितीत आहे. आज नाना फडणवीस वाडा यांच्या वंशजांची- फडणीस-मेनावलीकर कुटुंबाची खाजगी मालमत्ता आहे. चला तर मग या वाड्याची सैर करू.

A ticket counter has been set up right where we can enter the castle through Dindi Gate. It is valued at Rs. 50/ per person. In this ticket, a group of 5 to 10 people is formed and a guide is given to them. So it is possible to get complete information.

वाड्यात दिंडी दरवाज्यातून आपण प्रवेश घेऊ शकतो तेथेच एक तिकीट विक्री केंद्र बनवलेले आहे. याचे मूल्य Rs. 50/ प्रति व्यक्ति येवढे आहे. या तिकिटात एक 5 ते दहा माणसांचा ग्रुप बनवून त्यांना एक guide दिला जातो. त्यामुळे संपूर्ण माहिती मिळवणे शक्य होते.

• Dindi Door – दिंडी दरवाजा
  • A small door built inside the main door through which all commoners could enter the castle, if a great person came, the whole door was opened and they were admitted.
  • मुख्य दरवाज्याच्या आत बनवलेला छोटा दरवाजा जेथून सर्व सामान्य व्यक्तींना वाड्यात येता जाता येत असे, कोणी मोठी व्यक्ति आल्यास संपूर्ण दरवाजा उघडून त्यांना प्रवेश दिला जात असे.
• Ganesh Chowk – गणेश चौक
  • Here is a miniature replica of the famous Maha Ganapati i.e. Dholya Ganapati of Wai. And next to it are two barns.
  • येथे वाई येथील प्रसिद्ध महा गणपति म्हणजेच Dholya गणपती यांची छोटेखानी प्रतिकृती आहे. व त्याच्या शेजारी दोन धान्याची कोठारे आहेत.
• Haldi Kunkwacha Chowk – हळदी कुंकवाचा चौक
  • A separate hall was provided for various ceremonies of Peshwa women. It had stone fountains, paintings, and various other embellishments. This Chowk is a slightly inward Chowk after Ganesh Chowk.
  • पेशवेकालीन स्त्रियांच्या विविध समारंभासाठी एक वेगळे दालन उपलब्ध करून दिले गेले होते. त्यात दगडी कारंजे, भीतीचित्र, आणी अनेक वेगवेगळ्या पद्धतीने सुशोभीकरण करण्यात आले होते. हा चौक  गणेश चौका नंतर काहीसा आतल्या बाजूस असलेला चौक आहे.
• Buruj आणी नगारखाना
  • A tower was built on the three corners of the fort wall and there was a town hall. Guarding the fort and honoring the special persons coming to the fort, Naubat was played. Also this place was built to resist enemy attack.
  • वाड्याच्या तटबंदीच्या तीन कोपर्‍यावर बुरुज बांधलेला होता व तेथेच नगारखाना ही होता. येणार्‍या व्यक्तींवर पाळत गडाचे संरक्षण आणी वाड्यात येणार्‍या विशेष व्यक्तींचा आदरसत्कार, नौबत वाजून केला जायचा. तसेच शत्रूच्या आक्रमणाच्या प्रतिकार करणे साठी ही जागा बांधण्यात आली होती.
• Menavali office – मेणवली दप्तर
  • fadanvis was a title, in today’s terms finance minister and revenue minister. His place of work was called Daptar. It is on the first floor above Ganesh Chowk.
  • Fadanvis ही एक पदवी होती, आजच्या युगात सांगायचे झाले तर वित्तमंत्री आणी महसूल मंत्री. त्याच्या कामकाजाच्या जागेस दप्तर असे संबोधले जात असे. हे गणेश चौकाच्या वरील बाजूस पहिल्या माळ्यावर आहे.
• Nagarkhana – नगारखाना

  • There is a small room with a spacious and carved bed. Ceiling fan, stone bowls are provided under bed legs. A trick which is kept full of water so that some insects come from the ground to the bed.
  • येथे एक लहान खोली आहे आणि एक प्रशस्त आणि त्यात कोरीव काम केलेला पलंग आहे. छताचा पंखा,  पलंगाच्या पायांच्या खाली दगडी वाट्या दिल्या आहेत. ज्यात पाणी भरून ठेवले जाई जेणेकरून काही कीटक जमिनी पासून पलंगावर येऊनये यासाठी केलेली युक्ती.
• Khalbat Khana – खलबत खाना
  • Khalbat Khana means planning room, privacy was important for a very important news or planning of an upcoming movement. So a place was made whose door was like a trap in the wall. Inside which was a sound proof room surrounded by strong walls. Where thousands of sounds could not be heard by outsiders.
    • खलबत खाना म्हणजे प्लॅनिंग रूम, एखादी अतिशय महत्त्वाची बातमी अन्यथा आगामी चळवळीची मोर्चे बांधणी या साठी गोपनीयता महत्त्वाची होती. त्यामुळे  एक अशी जागा बनवली गेली की जिचा दरवाजा अगदी भिंतीतील कपटासारखा होता. ज्याच्या आत भक्कम भिंतीनी वेढलेली ध्वनीरोधक खोली खोली होती. जेथला तसूभर आवाज ही बाहेरील व्यक्तिंना ऐकू येत नसे.
    • दिवाणखाना म्हणजे हॉल जेथे कुटुंब अथवा पाहुणे मंडळी एकत्रित येऊन सोबत वेळ व्यतीत करीत असत. जी एक प्रशस्त अशी मोकळी खोली आणी ज्यामधे अधिक कलाकुसर आणी देखाव्यांची मुळे यजमानांचे वैभव दिसून येत असे.
