Gokarna is located in the state of Karnataka in the northern Kannada district of India. This is the only Aatmalinga in the world. Story of Gokarna Temple – गोकर्ण मंदिराची कथा

Gokarna – Go = Cow and Karna = Ear. Gokarna is one and only atmaling in world. This is story from Ramayan. The Ravana king of Asur. गो = गाय आणि कर्ण = कान. गोकर्ण हा जगातील एकमेव आत्मा आहे. ही रामायणातील कथा आहे. असुरचा राजा रावण.

Ravana was a Shiva bhakta. One’s his mother ask to bring Shivalinga. So Ravana do a very hard Tapachariya ( Prayer ) near kailash parvat. He is so strong that he pick entire kailash parvat. Lord Shiva like ravana Tapachariya and bless him with Atmaling.

रावण हा शिवभक्त होते. एकदा त्यांची आई त्यांना शिवलिंग आणायला सांगते. त्यासाठी रावण प्रत्यक्ष कैलास पर्वताजवळ अत्यंत कठोर तपाचार्य (प्रार्थना) करतो. तो इतका बलवान आहे आणी सामर्थ्यवान होते की त्याने संपूर्ण कैलास पर्वत उचलला. भगवान शिव हे रावणाच्या तपश्चर्येला आशिर्वाद स्वरुपात त्याला आत्मलिंग भेट देतात.

Aatmaling – आत्मलिंग

Aatmaling meaning is that Shiva linga has power as good as lord Shiva. When other gods know about this they are scared if Ravana establishes this Shivaling in his Lanka then he will be the owner of unlimited power and no one can able to fight him.

आत्मलिंगचा अर्थ असा आहे की शिवलिंगात भगवान शिवाइतकीच शक्ती आहे. कारण हे शिवलिंग प्रत्यक्ष भगवान शिवानी स्वहस्ते रावणाला आशिर्वाद स्वरुपात दिले. हे जेव्हा इतर देवांना हे कळते तेव्हा ते घाबरतात जर रावणाने हे शिवलिंग आपल्या लंकेत स्थापित केले तर तो अमर्याद शक्तीचा मालक होईल आणि कोणीही त्याच्याशी लढू शकणार नाही.

All the gods including Indra reached near Lord Vishnu at Vaikuntha Dham. Lord Vishnu called Lord Ganesha and requested him to help him implement the plan. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, Ravana could only place the Atmalinga on the ground once. So if he puts it down anywhere, the atmalinga will be fixed in that place, then no one will be able to reconstruct or move it. This was known to Lord Vishnu. So he planned to force Ravana to put down the Shivling on his way before Lanka.

इंद्रासह सर्व देव वैकुंठ धाम येथे भगवान विष्णूच्या जवळ पोहोचले. भगवान विष्णूने भगवान गणेशला बोलावले आणि त्याला योजना अंमलात आणण्यासाठी मदत करण्याची विनंती केली. भगवान शिवाच्या आशीर्वादा नुसार रावण हे आत्मलिंग फक्त एकदाच खाली जमिनीवर ठेऊ शकत होता. म्हणून त्याने ते कुठेही खाली ठेवले तर आत्मलिंग त्या ठिकाणी स्थिर होईल मग कोणीही पुनर्रचना करू शकणार नाही. हे भगवान विष्णु जाणून होते. त्यामुळे रावणाला कसेही करुन ते शिवलिंग रस्त्यात खाली ठेवण्यास भाग पडण्याची योजना आखली.

Lord Ganesha change his getup as Cowboy and meet Ravana on his way, he also remind Ravana about his Evening Prayer. Ravana was a Lord Shiva follower so he do Shiv prayer in every morning and evening. Ravana Request that Cowboy (lord Ganesha) to take care of Shivalinga and also instruct that do not kept on floor.

भगवान गणेश गुराखी चा वेषभूषा करुन रावणाला भेटतात, आणी रावणाला त्याच्या संध्याकाळच्या प्रार्थनेची आठवण करून देतात. रावण हा शिवाचा अनुयायी होता म्हणून तो नित्यनेमाने रोज सकाळ संध्याकाळ शिव प्रार्थना करत असे. त्यामूळे रावण गणेशरूपी गुराखी ला विनंती करतो की शिवलिंगाची काळजी घ्या आणि जमिनीवर ठेवू नका अशी देखील सूचना ही देतो.

As per Lord Vishnu’s plan Ganesha call Ravana 3 times and after that he put Shivalinga on that place. Shivalinga shape is just like a Gokarna so this place named As Gokarna. After that Ravana try to move that Atmalinga to his Lanka but he not able to do and The one and only Atmaling find his permanent place and the place become famous as GOKARNA.

To fulfill Mother’s wish

My mother was a follower of lord Shiva Shankar. She wants to visit Gokarna at least once in her life but she not able to complete her wish due to her early exit from her life. She is no more, I was just 8 years old when my mother was expired, my grandmother always tell me about my mother even my elder sister wants to fulfill mothers wish.

माझी आई भगवान शिव शंकराची अनुयायी होती. तिला आयुष्यात एकदा तरी गोकर्णाला भेट द्यायची आहे पण ती तिच्या आयुष्यातून लवकर निघून गेल्याने तिची इच्छा पूर्ण करू शकली नाही. ती आता राहिली नाही, माझ्या आईचे निधन झाले तेव्हा मी फक्त 8 वर्षांचा होतो, माझी आजी मला नेहमी माझ्या आईबद्दल सांगते अगदी माझ्या मोठ्या बहिणीलाही आईची इच्छा पूर्ण करायची आहे.

When I start my Bike riding, My first goal to visit Mumbai to Goa. When I achieve that and become more confident I decided to Visit Gokarn to fulfill my Mother’s wish.

Mumbai to Gokarna travel route

I visit this place during my Mumbai to Gokarna bike ride. We were accompanied by two bike riders. Me and my friend Sameer Ganekar. We started from Mumbai and chose Pune-Bangalore highway to go via Belgaum, Kittur, Yelapur, Madangeri Gokarna. Our journey which was about 690 km. At half past eleven we reach Gokarna.

मी माझ्या मुंबई ते गोकर्ण बाईक राईड दरम्यान या ठिकाणाला भेट देतो. आम्ही दोन दुचाकीस्वार सोबत होतो. मी आणि माझा मित्र समीर गाणेकर. आम्ही मुंबईपासून सुरुवात केली आणि बेळगाव, कित्तूर, येलापूर, मदनगेरी गोकर्ण मार्गे जाण्यासाठी पुणे _बंगलोर महामार्ग निवडला. आमचा प्रवास जो सुमारे 690 किमी चा होता. रात्री साडेअकरा वाजता आम्ही गोकर्णाला पोहोचतो.

We were looking for some hotels and finally we found Hotel Gokarna Punyashram at a reasonable price. Mr. Chandu is working there as a manager. His contact number is = 7204707099. Here he gives us a total package including breakfast and dinner and accommodation. Rs. 600 / – per person at such a low rate and the hotel is in a scenic spot on top of a hill. And Gokarna is only 10 minutes walk from Mahabaleshwar temple. Great South – Indian style meal with delicious rasam and rice was delicious.

आम्ही काही हॉटेल शोधत होतो आणि शेवटी एक वाजवी दरात हॉटेल गोकर्ण पुण्यश्रम आम्हास सापडले. श्री चंदू हे तिथे व्यवस्थापक म्हणुन कार्यरत आहेत त्यांचा संपर्क क्रमांक = 7204707099. येथे आम्हाला न्याहारी आणि रात्रीचे जेवण आणि निवास यासह एकूण पॅकेज देतात. रु. 600/- व्यक्ती एवढ्या कमी दरात आणी ते हॉटेल डोंगराच्या माथ्यावर निसर्गरम्य ठिकाणी होते. आणि गोकर्ण महाबळेश्वर मंदिरापासून फक्त 10 मिनिटांच्या पायी अंतरावर होते. उत्तम दक्षिण – स्वादिष्ट रसम आणि भात असलेले भारतीय शैलीचे जेवण फार रुचकर होते.

We wake early morning and dressed just like a south Indian. I wear a white shirt and white lungi and my friend Sameer wear white dhoti it’s a traditional dress of the south after that we first visit Lord Ganesha temple and next Mahabaleshwar temple. Both temples are well decorated with flowers. You can get lotus and many fresh flowers outside the temple.

आम्ही सकाळी लवकर उठलो आणि दक्षिण भारतीयां सारखी वेषभूषा करण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. मी पांढरा शर्ट आणि पांढरी लुंगी परिधान केली आणि माझा मित्र समीर पांढरा धोतर परिधान केला. हा दक्षिणेचा पारंपारिक पोशाख आहे त्यानंतर आम्ही प्रथम गणेश मंदिर आणि नंतर महाबळेश्वर मंदिराला भेट देतो. दोन्ही मंदिरे फुलांनी सजवली आहेत. तुम्हाला मंदिराबाहेर कमळ आणि अनेक ताजी फुले मिळतील.

To enter in Mahabaleshwar temple lungi or dhoti is compulsory for men and Sari is compulsory for women. Without Traditional Dress security guard will not allowed you to enter in temple. This item also available in nearby shops.

महाबळेश्वर मंदिरात प्रवेश करण्यासाठी पुरुषांसाठी लुंगी किंवा धोतर अनिवार्य आहे आणि महिलांसाठी साडी अनिवार्य आहे. पारंपारिक पोशाखाशिवाय सुरक्षा रक्षक तुम्हाला मंदिरात प्रवेश देणार नाही. हा पदार्थ जवळपासच्या दुकानातही उपलब्ध आहे.

How to reach Gokarna with map link

Gokarna is a Small town in Karnataka but it’s nearby to Goa and Maharashtra border so there are two ways to reach Mumbai to Gokarna.

Mumbai to Pune – Bangalore highway route via Kolhapur and Belgaum – Kittur Gokarna.
- Two option available from Belgaum to Gokarna. If you like forest ride or off-roading you can choose route via kittur – Alanvar – yelapur route. = Mumbai to Gokarna Distence 686 Km
- If you are with the family and want a more smooth route then choose then via Hubli it’s a Highway. You have to drive 35 km more but it’s worth. Mumbai to Gokarna Distence 719 Km
Mumbai to Goa route via Ratnagiri Sindudurga – Kankon – Gokarna. = 756 Km
We tried both the route.
Local transport are available from Belgaum (Karnataka), Bhatkal (Karnataka) and Kankon (Goa)
Nearest airport is Dabolim airport Goa. = 146 Km
Nearest railway station to Gokarna is Gokarna road = 10 km
Bangalore to Gokarna distance = 489 Km
Pune to Gokarna distance = 544 Km
Belgaum to Gokarna distance = 212 Km
